{"id":18,"date":"2009-11-25T13:02:48","date_gmt":"2009-11-25T21:02:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/?p=18"},"modified":"2009-11-25T13:02:48","modified_gmt":"2009-11-25T21:02:48","slug":"one-skein-down-fifty-bazillion-to-go","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gknerd.com\/?p=18","title":{"rendered":"One Skein Down, Fifty Bazillion to Go"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">(Monkey Kitty* is making typing very difficult right now by resting his head on the spacebar.\u00a0 I\u2019ll try to pull it off anyway, but it might be touch and go for a while\u2026I blame any typos on him.)<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I live with a very sneaky, wonderful man, who (since I\u2019m not using real names here) we\u2019re going to call the Blanket Thief.\u00a0 One night a couple months ago, I was wondering what kind of socks I wanted to cast on for next and figured I\u2019d give <a href=\"http:\/\/scrubberbum.typepad.com\/moth_heaven\/2006\/07\/this_might_be_a.html\" target=\"_blank\">Arrgyles<\/a> a try.<\/p>\n<p>Swatching proved only that I wasn\u2019t going to like the resulting socks, as they somehow were going to end up too big for me (somehow, because the pattern is 70 sts around and I normally like 75-85 sts for my socks \u2013 then again, I also tend to like complicated stitch patterns that eat up width\u2026).\u00a0 Realizing that the Blanket Thief has much bigger feet and ankles than me, I asked if he might want a pair of <a href=\"http:\/\/scrubberbum.typepad.com\/moth_heaven\/2006\/07\/this_might_be_a.html\" target=\"_blank\">Arrgyles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, sure.\u00a0 I\u2019d love a pair of pirate socks.\u201d\u00a0 (I may have explained what <a href=\"http:\/\/scrubberbum.typepad.com\/moth_heaven\/2006\/07\/this_might_be_a.html\" target=\"_blank\">Arrgyles<\/a> were before we had this conversation \u2013 otherwise, his response would have been more like, \u201cUh, what?\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though you told me when we started dating that I should never knit you socks because you wouldn\u2019t appreciate them?\u201d\u00a0 (I may or may not have a habit of setting the Blanket Thief up.)<\/p>\n<p>He gave me an innocent look.\u00a0 \u201cDid I say that?\u201d\u00a0 I nod.\u00a0 \u201cWell, yeah, I guess I wouldn\u2019t appreciate socks as much as I would, say, a sweater.\u00a0 Actually, you know what would be really awesome?\u201d\u00a0 He got a gleam in his eye.\u00a0 \u201cCould you do that skull and crossbones thing on a sweater?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course!\u201d I cried, thinking to myself \u201c<em>I can knit practically anything, and he wants to know if I can knit one stinking sweater with a skull and crossbones on it?!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>At least I had enough wherewithal to make sure he understood it was going to be his Christmas present\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026all of that is just a setup for the cARGHdigan.\u00a0 Here\u2019s my progress so far:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/P1010024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"P1010024\" src=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/P1010024_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"P1010024\" width=\"394\" height=\"302\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The yarn is actually black, but the flash on my camera made it more of a gray\/slate color.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m always surprised by how long the end of a skein lasts \u2013 when there was this much left, I was sure it wouldn\u2019t last to the end of the row:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/P1010022.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"P1010022\" src=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/P1010022_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"P1010022\" width=\"244\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, when I finished that row and had this much left, I was sure I\u2019d have to replace it before I got to the end:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/P1010033.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"P1010033\" src=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/P1010033_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"P1010033\" width=\"244\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But at the end of the row, when I had <em>this much<\/em> left, then I was <em>sure<\/em> it wouldn\u2019t make it to the end of the row:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/P1010034.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right-width: 0px; display: inline; border-top-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px\" title=\"P1010034\" src=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/11\/P1010034_thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"P1010034\" width=\"244\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And dudes \u2013 I was totally right.\u00a0 One skein, down.\u00a0 Probably fifty-bazillion to go.<\/p>\n<p>I can\u2019t wait for the <a href=\"http:\/\/scrubberbum.typepad.com\/moth_heaven\/2006\/07\/this_might_be_a.html\" target=\"_blank\">Arrgyle<\/a> part to begin to relieve some of the monotony of the stockinette.\u00a0 What was I thinking, agreeing to a whole sweater?<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">*We live with two cats: Monkey Kitty and Bear Kitty (not their real names, of course \u2013 I think blogs are more fun with nicknames).\u00a0 I\u2019ll do a post or two later to explain where Monkey Kitty and Bear Kitty got their names.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Monkey Kitty* is making typing very difficult right now by resting his head on the spacebar.\u00a0 I\u2019ll try to pull it off anyway, but it might be touch and go for a while\u2026I blame any typos on him.)
