{"id":226,"date":"2010-02-14T18:53:41","date_gmt":"2010-02-15T02:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/?p=226"},"modified":"2010-02-14T18:53:41","modified_gmt":"2010-02-15T02:53:41","slug":"deborahs-got-some-splaining-to-do","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gknerd.com\/?p=226","title":{"rendered":"Deborah&#8217;s Got Some &#8216;Splaining To Do"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Remember when I cast on those socks with the Deborah Norville yarn?<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, me either.\u00a0 Apparently, it was in <a href=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/index.php\/2009\/11\/30\/the-selection-process\/\">November<\/a>.\u00a0 Since then, that pair have been my go-everywhere, knit-anytime socks, which I finally finished last week.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-228\" href=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/index.php\/2010\/02\/14\/deborahs-got-some-splaining-to-do\/p1010488\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-228\" title=\"P1010488\" src=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P1010488.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"415\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was my first time using Deborah Norville yarn, and&#8230;well, I&#8217;m not impressed.\u00a0 The colors are okay, and it&#8217;s rather soft, but that&#8217;s about all I can say for it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s <em>really<\/em> loosely spun, making it very splity.\u00a0 I&#8217;m also pretty sure that this will be my first pair of hand knit socks to develop holes, given that the finished fabric feels about as durable as paper.<\/p>\n<p>I could forgive all that, though &#8211; given that I got enough yarn for a pair of socks for five bucks, and given that my drawers really don&#8217;t need the addition of another pair of socks, I&#8217;d be willing to live with a pair that would wear out relatively quickly.\u00a0 I could even practice my darning skills (or, you know, embrace the more traditional &#8220;Darn it!&#8221; while tossing them in the trash).<\/p>\n<p>What I will <em>not<\/em> forgive, though, is this:<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-227\" href=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/index.php\/2010\/02\/14\/deborahs-got-some-splaining-to-do\/p1010487\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-227\" title=\"P1010487\" src=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P1010487.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Between the two balls of yarn, there was not one, not two, but <em>three<\/em> places where the yarn was cut and then tied.\u00a0 That&#8217;s <em>six<\/em> extra ends to weave in (even that I could forgive), but that also means that the color repeat was interrupted in random places and the <em>socks don&#8217;t match<\/em> (starting on the instep just after the heel).\u00a0 Just look at the toes!<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-229\" href=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/index.php\/2010\/02\/14\/deborahs-got-some-splaining-to-do\/p1010490\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-229\" title=\"P1010490\" src=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P1010490.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never subscribed to this idea of purposefully mismatched socks.\u00a0 In my head, socks are a pair, and they are by definition (again, in <em>my<\/em> head) supposed to be identical.\u00a0 I even scrapped quite a bit of perfectly good yarn just to ensure that I was starting at the same point in the color repeat on each sock.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I&#8217;m willing to give Deborah another shot.\u00a0 Given that her yarn was $5\/pair at the store, I didn&#8217;t exactly stop at this colorway.\u00a0 If I recall correctly, I actually have two other colorways of this yarn in my stash.\u00a0 So here&#8217;s the deal, Deborah: eventually, I&#8217;ll get around to knitting socks out of those other colorways.\u00a0 If either one of them shows the same behavior of random ends as this pair&#8230;well, I simply don&#8217;t have time for that kind of frustration in my life.\u00a0 Sorry, my dear, but I don&#8217;t deserve that, and although your yarn is certainly the cheapest I&#8217;ve found so far, I&#8217;m also willing to spend a few extra bucks to avoid the random ends<\/p>\n<p>Then again, maybe this pair were a fluke.\u00a0 I&#8217;m willing to believe that.\u00a0 But I&#8217;ll need the proof of both other pairs coming out just fine before I&#8217;m willing to bet any money on it.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, I <em>did <\/em>get a full pair of socks for $5.\u00a0 That&#8217;s really not a bad deal.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-230\" href=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/index.php\/2010\/02\/14\/deborahs-got-some-splaining-to-do\/p1010491\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-230\" title=\"P1010491\" src=\"http:\/\/gknerd.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/P1010491.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"415\" height=\"311\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remember when I cast on those socks with the Deborah Norville yarn?
